My working practices as an analogue fine art, film-based portrait photographer are deeply influenced by early twentieth-century portraiture, particularly the clarity and restraint of Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. I’m drawn to simplicity and to removing anything that feels unnecessary, often working with minimal surroundings so the focus stays on the person in front of me. Black and white film is central to how I work — it slows everything down and asks for commitment, patience, and trust from both sides. I tend to work quietly, with limited frames, allowing space for stillness and subtle shifts in expression. What I’m ultimately interested in is presence: creating portraits that feel honest, unforced, and shaped by the time spent together rather than by performance.
The process continues in my darkroom, where I create my fine art prints on silver gelatin fibre based photographic paper. This labour intensive process offers exceptional sharpness and a rich tonal range. Traditional toning techniques deepen blacks and enrich subtle gradations and skin tones.
Each print is presented intentionally as a final, physical heir loom — a tangible record of time, made with passion, empathy and craft.
